When Aiden first
started attending karate classes about a year ago, he was 3 years
old - and more interested in jumping on bags and running around the
karate studio than he was in listening attentively in class.
However, I have witnessed tremendous growth in his focus, attention,
discipline, and respect over the past year. He still has his "days,"
as any 4-year old does, but overall he seems to have developed a
kind of confidence that comes only from personal achievement. When
he earned his purple belt a couple weeks ago, I thought of the
incredible different between that promotion ceremony and his first
one, when he was reluctant even to leave my side for a moment. This
is true in his classes as well; he is no longer afraid to join his
classmates on the floor, and once he becomes focused on what he is
doing, he is a joy to watch.
Seeing his progress
encouraged me to join the AMAA Adult programs myself. I started off
only with fitness kickboxing at AMAA, and while I still enjoy those
classes, I have found a new challenge in taking karate. I can tell,
too, that Aiden is excited about the prospect of us working toward a
black belt together (even if he is quick to remind me that he
currently has a higher ranking belt than I do!). I am eager to learn
- and eager to work alongside my son as we achieve our goals. In
fact, I am thrilled to be a part of AMAA.
